The fun world of crafts

Ever since I stopped working, I have discovered the wonderful world of hobbies. Before I started getting interested in all artsy crafty stuff, I didn’t know that there would be so many interesting crafty finds out there. Nowadays with the internet, it is so easy to learn and discover new crafts. I have tried crocheting, quilting, sewing, baking, candle making and others. My latest hobby is jewelry making and I am loving it. The only problem is that it can be quite costly to maintain this hobby and so I am on a quest to look for wholesale jewelry supplies. Hopefully I will be able to reduce cost and indulge in this latest hobby for a longer time.

100 day project

Lil’ C’s official first school project! This was done last month after 100 days of kindergarten. They were supposed to make a poster out of 100 items. So we decided to make one out of 100 pom-poms. Out of these 100 pom-poms, she made a castle with a flag complete with a moat, flower and a caterpillar.

Other 100 days project ideas:

  • 100 stickers
  • 100 jellybeans
  • 100 cheerios or trix
  • 100 stamps
  • 100 buttons

Kids Craft: Vegetable Printing

Vegetable Printing

This was what we were doing earlier. Just cut up some vegetables like potato, carve a simple pattern on it and some paint and just let your child be creative. I think Lil’ C spend more than an hour doing this vegetable print. The good thing about this craft is that it requires minimal supervision. I just sat next to her and made sure that she had enough paint and fresh paper. I even managed to check out information about cholesterol medication for my DH while she was doing her craft. Now my dining table is filled with artwork but I have a happy child and that is what matters.

Making a handprint Christmas tree

Filed Under (Art & Crafts, Kids) by BlurMommy on 17-12-2009

Handprint Christmas Tree

This is a fun craft to do with your little ones for this Christmas season. It is also a good craft that you can just add one every year. The leaves are made using their handprint, so you can also see how much they have grown every year. As for the decorations, you can also make it a tradition for your child to write or draw something that they like. It will be so much fun to look back at these decorations a few years down the road.

Materials needed:

  • A triangle piece of green poster (size depends on how big you want the tree to be.)
  • A rectangle piece of brown paper for the tree trunk.
  • Green construction paper
  • Ornament template or stickers for ornaments
  • pencils and crayons

Instructions:

  1. Trace your childs hands on a piece of paper
  2. Have your child cut it out (Good exercise for fine motor skills)
  3. Stick the handprints onto the tree
  4. Add ornaments

Have fun making it!

Little Miss Piggy

Lil’ C’s favorite animal is the pig. Guess why it’s her favorite animal??? Because it’s PINK!!! Wonder when this pink phase will pass? Anyway, some time ago, we made this cute little pig using toilet paper roll. We actually made 3 to represent the piggies in the Three Little Pigs story. Actual craft instruction can be found HERE.

No-Sew Tutu

No-sew Tutu

When I saw this no-sew tutu that a friend made, I just knew that Lil’ C would love it. Since she wanted to be a butterfly fairy for this Halloween, it would be just perfect. This was a really easy project. I also referred to this tutorial for help. It probably took me about an hour to cut & tie the whole thing together and Lil’ C absolutely love it. She loved that she got to pick her own colors for her tutu. She also picked some rhinestones & flowers for embellishment. Her best friend saw this and had already placed an order for one in her favorite colors. :)

Ladybug

Another easy-peasy craft today. A ladybug puppet! Lil’ C was not very interested in coloring today. So we ended up with an almost white ladybug today. Otherwise it should be colored red. :) Actual instructions can be found here

Kids Craft: Making apple trees

Filed Under (Art & Crafts, Kids) by BlurMommy on 15-10-2009

Making apple trees

Materials needed:

  • 1 piece of brown construction paper for tree trunk
  • 1 piece of green construction paper for the tree
  • green & red crepe paper for apples
  • glue

Preparation time: 5 minutes

Time to complete craft: 15 minutes or more.

For younger kids, you can precut the trees for them. For older kids, they can draw and cut out the tree themselves. This will be a great exercise for their fine motor skills using the scissors. Just remember to use kid-friendly scissors. :) Have fun!!

Online Craft Club Show and Tell

Filed Under (Art & Crafts) by BlurMommy on 14-09-2007

I was bloghopping when I came across this Online Craft Club Show & Tell. It sounds really interesting and it may be just what I need to get my unfinished quilt out from storage, dust it off and start quilting again.

So here’s the first quilt top that I’ve ever done in my life. I started this in 2003. I used freezer paper to cut out the shapes, iron on the fabric and hand-stitch each hexagon. The entire piece was hand-sewn. It took me probably about 6 months. Then I got pregnant & had to stop beacuse I was spending most of my pregnancy in the bathroom!! *sigh*

A close-up look of the quilt top.

So what do you all think of my first quilt top?? : ) It’s a variation of the Grandmother’s Flower Garden. It’s supposed to be twin size so it’s almost done. I’m planning to give this to my gal. FYI, she’s almost 3 & that’s how long it’s been in storage!! haha!!
